For customers

What to do with a damaged or overheating power bank.

Rechargeable power banks can overheat or catch fire if they are damaged or misused. Check your ChargeUP rental before connecting it and stop using it immediately if you notice damage, unusual heat, swelling, leaking, smoke or venting gas.

Check the unit before use

Before connecting a power bank, check its casing and built-in cables. Never use a unit that is cracked, dented, crushed, overheating, swelling, leaking or venting gas.

If any of these warning signs appear during use, stop charging your phone. Disconnect the unit only if you can do so safely.

Returning a damaged power bank

Stop using a power bank if it appears damaged. If it is safe to handle and place in a station, return it to an available ChargeUP slot, then contact ChargeUP Support so it can be taken out of service.

Do not attempt to return a unit that is overheating, swollen, leaking, smoking, venting gas, on fire or otherwise unsafe to handle or place in a station. Keep other people away, contact Support and follow the emergency guidance below if it is smoking or on fire.

Do not place a power bank in household rubbish, recycling or hard-waste collection. Lithium-ion batteries require an appropriate battery-disposal or recycling service.

If the power bank is smoking or on fire

Do not touch, move or attempt to return the unit. Evacuate the area and, if it is safe, close doors to slow the spread of fire. Call Triple Zero (000) from a safe location and wait for firefighters.

Avoid breathing smoke or vapour and do not re-enter the area until emergency services say it is safe. Lithium-ion battery fires can reignite after visible smoke or flames have stopped.

Use a rental power bank safely

Keep the unit dry, out of direct sunlight and away from parked vehicles or other hot places. Do not open, crush, modify or attempt to repair a ChargeUP power bank.

If the power bank does not charge your phone and shows no signs of damage or overheating, disconnect it, return it normally and contact support with the station location and rental time.
